Crowns & Bridges

Dental Crown

A crown is like a tooth cap which is placed over your tooth, to protect the tooth or improve its aesthetics, or over a dental implant to replace missing tooth/teeth.

Why are Dental Crowns used?

Dental Crowns may be used for variety of reasons:

  • If you tooth is badly broken or decayed, it might not have enough structure left for support of any other restoration like a dental filling.
  • After Root Canal Treatment, a tooth is usually capped/crowned to protect to tooth from fracture, as it becomes more brittle after the Root Canal Treatment
  • Over an implant, a crown helps you in re-establishing functions of the lost tooth such as chewing, aesthetics, support, speech.
  • In case of cosmetic smile designing, crowns may be provided to alter the shape, shade and color of your natural teeth.
  • In case you have grinded you teeth too much resulting in small sized teeth, dental crowns may help re establish you dentition, also known as full mouth rehabilitation.

Dental Bridge

When two or more crowns are attached to replace a missing tooth in between, it is known as a dental bridge. In simple terms, it is used to “bridge” the gap between two or more teeth.

Why are Dental Bridges used?

Dental bridges are used when there are to maintain the function of your lost tooth/teeth such as:

  • Appearance
  • Chewing/incising
  • Speech
  • Support to facial muscles and adjoining teeth

A bridge may be placed on natural teeth or dental implants, or a combination of both.

How to take care of my Dental Crowns or Dental Bridge?

It is very simple as well as important to take proper care of your dental crowns/bridge

  • Brush properly over crowns and bridges as you do over your natural teeth.
  • If advised, use a inter-dental brush to clean between crowns and bridges
  • Avoid chewing hard food/items, do not open bottle caps using your teeth/crowns
