The Sanskrit word “yoga” actually means “union with the divine”

Yoga is the mental and physical practice that brings in much required discipline to achieve higher levels of spirituality and general wellness. It originated in ancient India and was fostered to let people experience one’s true self and attain a state of permanent peace of mind.

01 Yama

The five abstentions

Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (Truth, non-lying), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (non-sensuality, celibacy), & Aparigraha (non – possessiveness).

02 Niyama

The five observances

Shaucha (purity), Santosha (contentment), Tapas (austerity), Svadhyaya (study of the Vedic scriptures to know about God and the soul), and Ishvara-Pranidhana (surrender to God).

03 Asana

Literally means “seat”, and in Patanjali’s Sutras refers to the seated position used for meditation.

04 Pranayama

Suspending Breath

Prana, breath, “ayama”, to restrain or stop. Also interpreted as control of the life force.

05 Pratyahara


Withdrawal of the sense organs from external objects.

06 Dharana


Fixing the attention on a single object.

07 Dhyana


Intense contemplation of the nature of the object of meditation.

08 Samadhi


merging consciousness with the object of meditation
